New York Giant’s running back Saquon Barkley had a gruesome ankle injury during the game versus the Dallas Cowboys. Watching the injury on replay caused many of the faint hearted to look away. It seemed as almost instantly as his left ankle started to swell. When these types of injuries occur, swelling and pain is the most common symptom. Once the x-ray was negative for a fracture, the diagnosis of ankle sprain can be made.
Ankle sprains can be graded on a scale from 1-3 depending on the severity of the injury to the ankle ligament. The treatment initially will include RICE method. RICE stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. Depending on the severity of the injury, treatment may include physical therapy, bracing/taping or even surgical intervention. An MRI can be performed to further evaluate the extent of the injury.
The quick initial treatment wishes well for the return of Barkley to the football field. The training staff for the Giants are going to take the injury from day to day. From all of us at Brucato Foot and Ankle Surgery, we wish Saquon Barkley a safe and speedy recovery!
