Saquon is in the playoffs !

In 2018 the New York Giants were in desperate need for a running back. The veterans on the team that carried them to 2 Superbowls had retired. On draft day 2018 with the second overall pick, the New York Giants selected Saquon Barkley from Penn State. Barkley posted incredible rookie stats. He rushed 261 times for 1307 yards with 11 touchdowns. Everything was going great for the new Running back on the team.

In 2019, 2020, and 2021 Saquon Barkley suffered from ankle and knee injuries. These injuries kept him sidelined for many months. In 2019 he had a high ankle sprain and he was out for 3 weeks due to this injury. When he came back, he was not 100%. He did not look the same. He was not averaging the same yards per carry. Barkley underwent an intense rehabilitation process and was able to get back on the field. In 2020 he blew out his ACL which caused him to miss the remainder of the season.

In 2021 he had another ankle injury. This time keeping him out for a little over 1 month. Chronic ankle sprains can lead to ankle instability. If this occurs surgical intervention is warranted. Luckily for Barkley, it was not necessary. He was able to return fairly quickly.

Ankle sprains can be classified by the severity of injury (refer to below)

GRADE 1:
Stretch or partial tear of a ligament
Symptoms: Mild pain/swelling. No instability. No loss of function
Treatment: Rest, Ice, Physical therapy
Return to Activity: Approximately 2 weeks

GRADE 2:
Incomplete tear of ligament
Symptoms: Moderate pain/swelling. Bruising. Pain with weight bearing
Treatment: Rest, Ice, bracing/taping, Physical therapy
Return to Activity: Approximately 3-4 weeks

GRADE 3:
Complete tear of ligament
Symptoms: Severe swelling/bruising. Instability and loss of function
Treatment: Rest, Ice, Bracing/taping, Physical therapy, Surgery
Return to Activity: Approximately 6-10 weeks

After you suffer an ankle sprain, the first line of treatment is to rest, ice, elevate, and compress to control swelling and pain. If you are unable to walk more than 4 steps, you may need an X-ray to make sure you do not have a fracture.

Many people did not think Barkley would be playing at the same level of intensity from his rookie year. Many people counted him out as being injury prone. This year 2022 Barkley unleashed and had an amazing season! He rushed 295 times totaling 1312 yards and 10 touchdowns. Barkley was a key ingredient and centerpiece of the New York Giants offense. With his help the Giants were able to get to the playoffs and will face the Vikings this weekend. We at Brucato Foot and Ankle wish Saquon Barkley all the best in the playoffs! Go Giants!
